Air travel has consistently been one of the safest forms of travel since the inception of its access to the general population. A series of checks and balances, intensive training, highly developed technologies, and extensive regulations contribute to high levels of security in air travel.
Not only is air travel the safest way to travel, but it is also one of the most popular ways to travel. According to the Federal Aviation Administration there almost 20,000 airports in use today and over 10 million passenger flights scheduled yearly. Annual earnings from aviation come close to half a trillion dollars yearly and contributes 5.2% to U.S. gross domestic product. Statista reports a general aviation fleet of 220,000 aircrafts and 348 million passengers boarding some of the U.S.'s largest airline carriers. In 2021, the U.S. airline industry employed over 400,000 full time employees.
However, recent media reports have tried to paint a different picture of air travel. The media has taken advantage of a few recent airline accidents to instill fear in the general public regarding air travel. While these incidents were unfortunate, it is dangerous for this sensationalist reporting to only highlight these exteremely rare instances of accidents and ignore the overall trends of safety in air travel. This reporting puts 400,000 employees’ jobs at risk and also poses a major risk to the economic security of the country. And in fact, it purposely ignores the overall increase in flight safety with every passing year.
In the U.S. there have been no fatalaties from flights in over 10 years.
Airline accidents in general have continued to climb downward in the past 80 years.
The data shows that media reports are false and if anything, airliner travel continues to become safer and safer with every passing year. If you the option to travel and safety is your top priority, this author would recommend hopping a flight before taking that road trip.
